Home and Hospital Clergy Visits

It is the duty of every Christian to visit those who are homebound or hospitalized. If you or someone you know is ill or hospitalized and would like to be visited, please call Fr. Nigoghos Aznavourian at 914-843-6230. Please note: when asked about your religion at a hospital, patients should list themselves as “Armenian Orthodox” or “Armenian” not “other.” Please note that hospitals no longer automatically inform clergy if a parishioner has been hospitalized or undergoing medical treatment.

Requiem/Hokehankist Requests

Arrangements for requiem service should be made through Fr. Nigoghos via email by Thursday noon. Providing altar flowers to beautify the altar on the day of the hokehankist is a traditional Armenian practice as well. In accordance with the canons of the Armenian Church, Requiem Services may not be performed on the five major feast days:
Armenian Christmas (Soorp Dznoont)
Easter (Zadig)
Feast of the Transfiguration (Vartavar)
Feast of the Assumption (Asdvadzadzin)
Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Khachverats)

Baptisms and Chrismations

All baptisms must be scheduled at least two months in advance by calling Fr. Nigoghos at 914-843-6230. According to the Armenian Church canons, a Baptism may only be performed once in a person’s lifetime, provided such Baptism has been performed in a Christian Church and in the name of the Holy Trinity. At least one of the godparents must be a member of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church. Chrismation is offered to those who have been baptized in a Christian Church other than the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is also traditional for newborns to be dedicated to God during the 40-Day Infant Blessing service well before the child's baptism.

Weddings

Couples should contact Fr. Nigoghos at 914-843-6230 or email at least eight months in advance to confirm the availability of the Pastor and sanctuary prior to making any other arrangements. All weddings must follow the Canons of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church and the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

In accordance with Diocesan discipline mandated by the Primate, all Sacraments must be performed in the church sanctuary. The couple must meet with the Pastor at least three times for pre-marital preparation and counseling. Weddings cannot be performed during Great Lent or Holy Week, or on the five major feast days noted above.

Funerals

Families should make arrangements with the funeral director of their choice, who will contact the church office to arrange the funeral service. Generally, St. Mark Armenian Church coordinates funerals with Sampson Family Chapels who is familiar with our Church traditions. Funerals may not be performed on religious holidays, major feast days, Saturdays after 3:00 p.m., or on Sundays.
